Yoga has been an age old practice which, particularly in India it not only focuses on physical postures but also breathing techniques, meditation, cleansing, karma yoga(community service)and mantra chanting. In ancient India this has been an integral part of people’s lifestyles and has helped them live longer and healthier lives.

As we age, our bodies require an optimum amount of care to keep our system healthy, bones strong and the entire body, fit and flexible. For women over 60 years of age, calcium deficiencies in the body, as well as menopausal issues, take the front seat. To give proper attention to our physical stability, turning to yoga is the best option.

Let us look into some yoga poses which suits well.

1. Uttanasana (Forward Fold)

  • Stand with your feet close to each other
  • Lower your upper body towards your legs and bend down
  • Do not bend your legs as you reach your toes

2. Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose)

  • Sand straight and bring your right leg forward
  • Bend the right leg, prompting the left leg at back to bend down
  • Keep your upper body upright looking forward and raise your hands over your head

3. Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose)

  • Bring your body down on all 4s
  • Raise your knees up and extend out your glues
  • Your body will come in an inverted ‘V’ position

4. Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend Yoga Pose)

  • Sit on a mat with your legs extended out straight
  • Breath in, extend your hands over your head
  • Bend forward and bring your fingers over your toes, exhale while doing so

5. Tadasana (Palm Tree Pose)

  • Stand upright and raise your hands over your head
  • Interlock your fingers and raise your arms up
  • Raise over your feet and stretch up your body
  • Balance the body on your toes

6. Ardha Pavanmuktasana( Half Wind Release Pose)

  • Lie on the mat and bring up your left knee towards your stomach
  • Hold it close with your hands
  • Bring your chin up toward the knee

7. Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose)

  • Sit with your legs stretched out
  • Bend both your knees facing out and bring your feet together
  • Hold your feet with your hands and bend your body forward

8. Shavasana (Corpse Pose)

  • Lie on a mat, letting your body loosen up
  • Stretch out your limbs and calm your entire body

These Yoga poses will soothe the muscles of your body and help you feel flexible and fit.
