Have you ever noticed that cucumbers kept with tomatoes ripen faster than kept separated? Cucumbers tend to ripen fast as they are placed with bananas, tomatoes, melons, oranges.
Cucumbers reacts with ethylene gas and these fruits produce enough gases that make the cucumber lose its freshness. Also, avoid eating cucumber and tomatoes together in a salad.
Squash and Pumpkins with Pears and Apples
Never store these two combinations together below the temperature of 50-55 degrees F. Avoid apples, pears and similar fruits storing together with pumpkin will increase the life of pumpkin for 6 months. Small pumpkins have a life of a month approx.
Most herbs can be stored for two weeks in a fridge if you cut the ends and place them in a jar or cup filled with water. Don’t forget to replace the water as you smell or see a color change. Basils have more lifespan at room temperature.
Carrots, Yams, Kohlrabi, Beets, and Onions
These veggies absorb nutrients from the soil. To retain those nutrients it is suggested to store at dark, cool and humid place like root cellar but it is tough to maintain the same at home. Hence, you can keep them in a plastic bag for a week.
If you want to exceed life naturally, try to get some beach sand and preserve it for 2-3 months. You may also fill in a jar or plastic box filled with water (keep changing it in every 2-3 days) If you want to preserve it for a year follow the method below :
- Wash the carrots or alike veggies.
- Peel of the skin and cut as per your desired shape. Cut and remove both sides.
- Boil water and pour carrots.
- Boil carrots for 2-3 mins in high flame.
- Drain the water and put carrots to ice-cold water for 5 mins.
- Drain the water and put the carrots in a zip lock bag after releasing out the air completely and refrigerate.
They need to be kept separated from fruits like apple, pear, mango, orange, papaya. To have a longer life cover the stem with silver foil or plastic wrap. You may store bananas in freeze too without having them covered. Do you know cardamom alone can ripe the raw bananas fast by also making it taste sweeter?
Potatoes and onions
Always keep the potatoes and onions in the open air and never mix them together. Onions produce certain gas that sprouts up the potatoes and can make it rotten. Although, they taste good in hash browns.
Bananas can ripe the avocados faster. It is suggested to keep them in an airtight container in a fridge with a silver of onion and seed intact.
If you want your tomatoes to have a longer life and sweetness. Don’t refrigerate them whereas tomatoes that are cut should be placed in the freeze within 20 mins of cutting is unused.
Coriander and other leafy veggies
Always cut the root, keep it in an air-free plastic bag or box in a freeze and wash only when you use. Remove the rotten ones frequently. You may also wrap them in jute cloth and sprinkle some water over to store in a cool and dark place other than a refrigerator.
