Cancer is one of the most haunting disease of our generation. More than 12.6 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year and 7.6 million of them die. According to American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) 30-40% of these deaths can be prevented. There are more than 100 types of cancer, some common while some too rare. Studies conducted by these institutes supports the fact that reducing the intake of alcohol & tobacco, including exercise in your lifestyle and¬†eating varied diet can reduce the chances of 340,000 people of getting cancer. So, we’ve compiled a list of 10 easily accessible foods that can help you prevent cancer.


Garlic has been extensively used in our home cooked dishes for a reason. It contains sulfur compounds that strengthens body’s immune system to prevent cancer and has power to reduce tumour growth. Try to intake 3-4 garlic cloves daily.

Lime and Lemons

These two fruits of citric fruit family have enormous capability of reducing the risk of mouth, throat and stomach cancer. Starting your day with a 300ml water with lemon squeezed in it could be a good idea. You can include fresh lime juice in your diet as well.


Kiwi is again a great fruit that is not only rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, copper but it also possess enormous amount of antioxidants that helps in fighting cancer. You should take 2 kiwi per day, cut them in half and scoop out the pulp with a spoon.

Spring Onions

Just like garlics, spring onion is a wonderful ingredient for reducing the risk of cancer. It is seen to reduce the the risk of prostate cancer by 50 percent. Another superfood that helps prevent cancer is broccoli. According to studies, a compound named sulforaphane has properties of curing and preventing cancer. Try adding broccoli to your bowl of salad. But remember, always steam it instead of microwaving as it destroys almost 97% of cancer- prevention flavonoids.


Including large amount of cabbage in your diet reduces the risk of colon cancer and other cancers. It contains flavonoids that inhibits the cancer cell growth, prevents cells from free radicals and stops tumour growth. In females, cabbage can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, uterus cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer. You can either cook cabbage or chop it and put it in salad.


According to a study conducted by University of Michigan, ginger was found to kill ovarian cancer cells completely. Laboratory tumours induced in animals have shown slow growth if animals are pre treated with beta-ionone, a compound found in ginger. Try to add small amount of crushed ginger in your tea or use it as an ingredient while cooking your meals.
