A lot of people including me, does think that carbs are something help gain weight. Well, it isn’t entirely true. Only a part of it testifies to this truth. While intake of proteins and fats remains constant during this cycle. But the problem is when people try to mix carb cycle and fat cycle together to complicate things.

How does it affect your body?

When you consume carbohydrates they are broken down to sugars. These sugars then enter the blood stream. Due to this, insulin takes action on this sugar hence removing glucose. There is a great increase in insulin when you eat simple carbs(such as fruits or chocolates) whereas there is only a slight increase when you take in complex carbs(such as vegetables or grains). This insulin plays a very important role, that is, it signals the body to save these glucose molecules as fat.

However, it is seen that insulin actually helps burn glucose rather than fat. This is why carbohydrates actually are not much helpful in fat bruning. Here’s the time when you think that why not exclude it completely from diet? Well, you cannot, because it is seen that metabolism(a process of breakdown of various molecules especially fat) will also slow down in your body.

Also it is highly recommended that those who live life working in an office or doing absolutely no exercise shouldn’t consume carbs or should follow a low carb diet. While those who have a healthy lifestyle should definitely go ahead with carb cycling.

How to follow this cycle?

There are only 2 rules that you need to follow while trying to follow this cycle:

Rule 1: When you do intense workouts, starchy carbs (such as fruits, chocolates) and fruits along with proteins, veggies and heathy fats are recommended.

Rule 2: On days when you rest or rather stay off from exercise, don’t eat much starchy carbs, but resume to eat proteins, veggies, healthy fats and a limited amount of fruits.

High carb days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Low carb days: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday

Also high carbs doesn’t really mean that you can eat all that you like that day. No! No! it really doesn’t work that way. You should be able to distinguish between what is good for you and what’s not. here’s a small list to help you through it:

Good carbs:

  • Sweet/ white potato
  • Whole grain bread
  • Oatmeal
  • Whole wheat pasta
  • Brown rice

Bad carbs:

  • Cakes
  • White bread
  • Cereals
  • Pastries

Now that you know what’s good for you and what’s not, here is the diet plan you could follow but then also you could again prepare your own diet plan(given that it’s healthy!!)

During a low carb day: (day when you rest or workout for a lesser time)

  1. Breakfast: Eggs or protein shake with water
  2. Lunch: Salads with lots of meat and veggies.
  3. Dinner: Steak with veggies
  4. Snacks: Mixed nuts

During a high carb day: (day when do immense workout)

  1. Breakfast: Eggs or protein shake with water
  2. Lunch: Burritos with meat and veggies
  3. Dinner: Fish cake with rice and veggies
  4. Snacks: Bananas, baby carrots or oat meals

The benefits of carb cycling are many. However, there’s only one that keeps me going and that is, YOU DONT HAVE TO DIET EVERYDAY!!!! Its like one day you eat what you like the most and the next day you follow the diet. The best part is when you know that the next day you will definitely have some of your favourite food stuffs.
