We have always had trauma for complex words. The word ‘complex’ is a psychoanalytic term. So, it is clear that psychological disorders are pretty serious.
Schizophrenia is one such mental disorder that influences a person’s thoughts, feelings, and conduct. Certain genetic and environmental conditions prove to be the cause of this disorder.
We are about to discuss some unknown facts on this complex mental ailment.
In general, women and men respond in different manners to psychological disorders. In the case of schizophrenia, recent studies show that significant sex-specific treatments need to be introduced. Ignoring this fact make the launching of sex-oriented prevention for this disorder, impossible.
Are they really lazy?
While observing schizophrenic people, we think that they are very lame and lazy. Actually, that is not the case. Their everyday life is devastating as they are unable to fulfill even their personal chaos like going to the bathroom, bathing, dressing, eating, etc. They just need an extra hand.
Are Mental Hospitals Necessary?
Long before, a mental hospital was synonymous to this mental illness. Schizophrenic people were taken to the asylums, the moment they were diagnosed with this disorder. Mental Hospitals are never a complete solution. Social, family and community support is the ultimate treatment which never happens if asylum is taken as an option.
Dual Personality, Never!
People often use the terms split personality and schizophrenia interchangeably. Schizophrenic people have only false ideas and misconceptions which is not the grave symptoms of dual personality. Both are different scenarios.
Ultimate blame on Parenting
People often connect parenting to this, especially of mothers, as they are more involved with their child. Mothers suffering from mental illness, of any sort, can affect the child’s mental growth, of course. But it only aids the growth of this disorder and it is not the ultimate cause.
Dumb or Smart?
It is a wide misconception that all these people are less intelligent and that they are dumb. Well! That is not the case. Some have variegated capabilities which we are often blind to. John Nash, Nobel-Prize Winner for Mathematics, suffered from schizophrenia. Now, who’s dumb?
It is a common trend in films to make the serial or psychic killer, a schizophrenic person. It is not applicable in real life. These people may show violent acts but not the ones who are properly treated. The people who do these might also have childhood trauma and abuses.
It is a Chance
Just because your parents have a mental ailment, doesn’t mean that you will acquire it for sure. This entirely relies on risk factor and genes. It is a 50-50 chance, although the number of schizophrenic family members can increase the risk.
Recovery is Possible
People can live productive and happy lives with this condition. About 25% of the people, recover from this condition and 50% bring forth improvements. Proper treatment and medication make it possible.
John Nash is an epic example. He recovered from schizophrenia even without treatment and medication. And always remember that if “I” is replaced by “WE” in “ILLNESS” it becomes “WELLNESS”.
Better Things are Coming.
