It might be counter-intuitive but you’ll burn more calories in running than walking. Muscles need ‘ATP’ to move you from one point to another. Your body stores ATP only for few seconds of activity and needs to replenish it depending on how much you need it and how quickly you need it.  This is done by metabolising your fat and glycogen levels. Since running is more intense, it requires more ATP eventually burning more calories.
