Every person needs rest and sleep to re-energise body and work energetically the whole day. Sleep not only gives your body a rest but it also activates and repairs the cells of your body. A child must have at least 8 hours of sleep and a young person should have 7 hours of sleep daily. You sleep in the position you are comfortable, but have you ever pondered over the thought that what position is actually better for sleep? According to studies, it is best to sleep on your left side. Here are 5 reasons why sleeping on your left is a good idea:

When you sleep on the left side, you boost up your digestion which is made worse when you sleep on your right side. The left side helps the body to move the waste faster from the larger intestine into the lower colon. During right side sleep, the stomach and pancreases hang naturally and so slows down the digestion process.
2. Better lymphatic system
In holistic medicine, the left side of the body controls the lymphatic side (An important part of the immune system) which means when you sleep on the left side, your body has more time to filter toxins, lymph fluid, through the thoracic duct and the lymph nodes. However sleeping on the right side lowers the lymphatic system.

Left side sleep helps to take of some weight from your heart. Gravity helps lymph drainage towards the heart and the aortic circulation away from the heart. It is doctors advice that pregnant woman must sleep on the left side to increase the circulation to the heart.

Sleeping on the left side not only helps pregnant woman to have optimal blood flow but also help to ease the weight on the back. It keeps the uterus from squeezing the liver and raise blood flow to the uterus, kidneys and fetus. So it is advised to pregnant woman to sleep as much as possible to sleep on the left side.

A study written in The Journal Of Clinical Gastroenterology have found that sleeping on the left side can help lower acid reflex signs because our stomach lies on the left side. While lying on the right side gives the exact opposite returns.

Sleeping on left side is highly recommended for the people who have chronic back pain because it helps to reduce the weight on the spine.
